Zero Waste
Zero Waste is a Sustainability Pillar in our Sustainability Strategy 2021 - 2031. The relevant key principle is: 'The Shire seeks to embrace the role of a leader in the community by minimising waste'. Our objectives related to this pillar are:
- Aim for zero waste to landfill by 2030
- Aim for zero wastewater to natural waterways by 2030
- Implement best-practice in relation to waste management to reduce waste going to landfill
- Support the building industry in reducing waste through re-use and recycling

What We're Doing
Some current and recent projects and operations related to the Zero Waste pillar include:
- Our Waste Services team looks after the Denmark and Peaceful Bay Tips. Our friends at Green Skills Denmark look after the management of the local Containers for Change collection point and our famous Tip Shop, promoting reuse, repurposing and recycling. Details about opening hours, tip pass information, Containers for Change and the Greenskills Tip Shop are available on our Waste Services page.
- Our team encourages community members and visitors to educate themselves on how to sort your waste by visiting the Waste Sorted or Recycle Right websites.
-
The Shire is currently co-funding a Biochar research project Waste to Net Zero (Biochar Program), converting Denmark's green waste into biochar for potential use in our local agriculture sector. To find out more about this project, please visit the Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee website.
- Denmark is an annual participant in the national Garage Sale Trail each November, aimed at diverting items from landfill
- We are working with Western Australian Country Health Service on a collaborative project with local enthusiasts to promote the use of cloth nappies. The program will see every Denmark new baby receive the gift of one cloth nappy. Cloth nappies are also available for purchase locally, and patterns are available at the Denmark Public Library.
- The Shire collaborates with local community activist group Plastic Reduction Denmark to consult with local café retailers to reduce single-use coffee cup waste in Denmark. In addition to the mug library initiative, there has been broad support for the introduction of a network reusable coffee cup solution.
