The Shire of Denmark is preparing to replace rubbish and recycling bin lid colours to align with the recognisable Australian Standard in the coming months.
The bin lid replacement roll-out will commence in March this year, with a contractor to be engaged to change over bin lids throughout the Denmark, Nornalup and Peaceful Bay townsites.
The program goal is to reduce contamination of recycling bins due to confusion over differences between local bin lids and those elsewhere in Australia and thereby reducing the amount of waste to landfill from bins in the Shire of Denmark.
Red recycling bin lids will be replaced with nationally recognised yellow lids and current green or yellow lids for general waste with red. In an effort to assist residents and visitors with the changeover and to further divert valuable resources from landfill, Waste Sorted information stickers will also be applied to the new lids with details on what to put in which bin.
Shire of Denmark Waste Officer Eva Overton said she hoped the stickers would help the community make the right choices.
“We’re hoping to make it easier for our community to really get to know their bins,” Ms Overton said.
“We know the Denmark, Nornalup and Peaceful Bay community is really proud of our pristine environment and we all want to do our bit to reduce our impact on the planet, so I hope this changeover will help us all.”
The new bin lid colours will be effective from February 2022 for all new services, while current lids will be replaced by contractors throughout March and April this year, with residents to receive direct communication on the details in the mail.
Community engagement for this project and other Waste Services initiatives is now underway with information stalls hosted by our Waste Officer at the following upcoming events:
Wednesday 26 January Australia Day Twilight Concert at Berridge Park from 4pm to 7pm
Sunday 30 January Kwoorabup Community Markets at Golden Hill Steiner School from 10am to 2pm
Sunday 6 February Kwoorabup Community Markets at Golden Hill Steiner School from 10am to 2pm
Community members who want to learn more about what can and cannot go in kerbside bins, as well as other Waste Services available in the Shire of Denmark are encouraged to pop by and say hello.
