A variety of community-oriented environmental education programs will receive financial and in-kind support from the Shire of Denmark again this year with funding made available through the Shire’s sustainability budget.
A call for expressions of interest went out to relevant local not-for-profit and non-government organisations earlier this year, with the Shire’s Sustainability Officer pleased to receive several submissions from a range of community environmental groups.
Successful proposals which met the criteria were submitted by organisations including Green Skills, Earthrise Productions, Denmark Bird Group and South Coast Bush Care Services with education programs and events covering topics like plant propagation, guided walks in peri-urban reserves, brochures and information sheets on the flora, fauna values and cultural significance of our bushland areas.
Also included were waste audits and education workshops, eco film festivals, wetland and weed management and an arts festival celebrating indigenous heritage cultural values of Wilson Inlet Nullaki.
“We are very lucky to be able to harness and engage with the depth of skills and expertise in the environmental sphere that exists within our community,” Sustainability Officer Yvette Caruso said.
Denmark Shire President Ceinwen Gearon said the Shire has a history of supporting public education programs for sustainability in the community.
“By offering our support to these educational activities we hope even more members of our community will be able to access the incredible bank of knowledge which exists in our community,” Cr Gearon said.
“We’re also pleased to continue our community leadership in the sustainability space which we committed to do when we adopted our Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan a year ago.”
In addition to leadership commitments made, key objectives included the promotion of sustainable best practice within the broader community and supporting the provision of education to the broader community on protection of the natural environment.
