Waterways

Our wetland environments are extensive and unique. Wetland systems in the Shire of Denmark include Parry Inlet, Irwin Inlet, Owingup Swamp and Wilson Inlet. Frogs, reptiles and birds that live in these areas rely on wetlands for survival. We acknowledge the importance of rivers, inlets and coastline to residents, visitors and the local economy, and implements and advocates for policies with other relevant authorities and organisations to maintain these to a high standard of health and amenity.

What We Do

Collaborative Partnerships

We work closely with a range of land users, organisations, authorities and community groups to ensure the on-going health of our waterways, but the Shire is not the lead agency for the coordination and delivery of outcomes in water quality.

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation consults the Shire as a primary stakeholder in their management of inlets, rivers and wetlands.

Inlet Opening Protocols

Water Corporation is the agency responsible for the opening of the Wilson Inlet.

The Shire of Denmark is the agency responsible for the opening of the Parry Inlet and the Irwin Inlet (Peaceful Bay).

The Opening Protocol documents are available below under Related Documents.

Revegetation Projects

Our Revegetation and Sustainability Officers work closely with local organisation Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee to re-establish illegally cleared native vegetation along the foreshore of the Wilson Inlet.

Local schools and community volunteers are often involved in revegetation projects locally, with community planting days held each spring.
