Stage 2: Extension to Wilderness Ocean Walk Trail

Denmark’s popular Wilderness Ocean Walk (WOW) Trail is being extended as part of a collaborative partnership between the Shire of Denmark and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

Three Chillies Design has been contracted to undertake construction of Stage 2 of the WOW trail from the wind turbines to Sinker Bay carpark.

The Stage 2 extension involves construction of a 3.2km long, 1.2m wide compacted road base trail surface intended as a dual use hiking and bike-riding trail and will be suitable for cycle touring with extensive uninterrupted views over the Southern Ocean and headlands.

Construction is anticipated to commence next week and is due for completion by the end of July, weather permitting.

Shire of Denmark Chief Executive Officer David Schober said the extension is an exciting update to the current WOW trail.

“We are aware that there are heritage and environmental sensitivities in regards to the placement of the extension of the trail, so all the appropriate flora, fauna and dieback surveys have been conducted and the goal of the construction phase is to create minimal disturbance, reducing the chances of introducing weeds and disease,” Mr Schober said.

“Traditional Custodian monitors will be overseeing the initial alignment stage and soil disturbance prior to building the trail surface.”

The project is being funded through the State Government’s WA Recovery Plan initiative to implement the Great Southern Adventure Trails and will provide part of an expanded coastal trail network in the Denmark area in the broader setting of trail opportunities for the region.
