Clear community feedback on the need for the Shire of Denmark to better prioritise local roads and storm water drainage across the Shire’s more than 600km road network has led to a boost in funding with the adoption of the 2023/24 budget.
At a Special Meeting of Council held last night, Council signed off on a transport projects budget of $2.4 million, giving the go-ahead on a suite of major roads projects to get underway this financial year thanks to a combination of Shire of Denmark ($900,000) and Main Roads ($1.58M) funding.
In the year ahead, Kernuts Road will get some much-needed care, set to be widened and sealed, and a section of Mount Shadforth Road close to town will undergo reconstruction including drainage improvements.
Roads in the western parts of the Shire will not be forgotten, with Conspicuous Beach Road set for a gravel resheet and improved drainage, the same for Parker Road, while Hazelvale Road will get a reseal and drainage upgrades.
Parts of Mount Lindesay Road will have a gravel resheet and improved drainage and Bastiani Road will be widened and receive a new resheet.
Shire President Ceinwen Gearon said Council was listening to community feedback.
“More than 1700 community members contributed to the engagement for our Strategic Community Plan review in recent months and the clear priority they identified was our local roads,” Dr Gearon said.
“Maintaining a road network the size of ours is a big and expensive job and we’ve been working hard in this space, but we recognise our community wants us to do more, so we’re pleased to have been able to boost the funding allocated in this budget.”
“I’m proud to say we’ve got projects in the budget from the east to the west of our Shire and I’m sure our community will join me in praying to the weather gods for favourable conditions at all the necessary project intervals throughout 2023/24!”
More information about roads projects and maintenance this year will be made available in the months ahead.
