At last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, the Denmark Shire Council voted to advertise a new planning policy which would guide the assessment of caravan park proposals within the Shire of Denmark.
It comes on the back of a growing trend of small-scale caravan parks and camping grounds appearing on rural properties, taking advantage of booming tourism within the Shire.
The proposed Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds policy, soon available for public comment, aims to provide clarity on what is expected of operators, as well as providing direction to Council and Shire staff.
Shire of Denmark Chief Executive Officer David Schober said this type of holiday accommodation is the camping equivalent of AirBnB.
“Our Sustainable Tourism Strategy recognises the growing market demand for smaller scale camping options like what we’ve been seeing grow in popularity here in our Shire,” Mr Schober said.
“So we’re not proposing a blanket ‘no’ for this type of accommodation, we’re proposing to clarify the regulations in the interests of preserving the character of our community and neighbourhoods, looking after our environment and protecting the health and safety of residents and visitors.”
Mr Schober said the draft policy will be available for comment in the coming weeks.
“We’re looking for feedback from the community to get a sense of if we’ve got the balance right before Council votes on whether to adopt the draft policy,” he said.
